Project Overview
For our project, we interviewed 4 people who have lived and grew up in a bilingual or multilingual home. Our interviews aimed to discover what the advantages and disadvantages of multilingual homes were. In the process, we were able to gain information about how people would interact in their homes across languages, how the multiple languages influenced their home lives and their social life, and the struggles they faced growing up either speaking or understanding multiple languages. We also uncovered how relationships between families are stronger or weaker due to distinct languages being spoken by different members of the family. We found out ways in which people can overcome language barriers and also shed this enlightenment on our interviewees. Both sides of the interview gained knowledge about language within families though our project.
